LANCASTER – A man suspected of biting and beating a man at a liquor store, leading deputies on a brief car chase and then forcing himself inside someone’s apartment to escape capture was arrested Monday evening.
Telly Mitchell, 37, was arrested around 7 p.m. Monday in the 43600 Block of Standridge Avenue in Lancaster, authorities said.
Mitchell is suspected of beating a man at the Bootleggers liquor store on Avenue K and Division Street, according to Lancaster Station Watch Sgt. K. Turrill.
“Deputies responded to a fight call and they were directed to a suspect’s vehicle,” Turrill said. “The deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over, a pursuit was initiated.”
Mitchell led deputies on a brief chase, in an older-model Honda with no plates, before crashing the vehicle into a curb near an apartment complex on Standridge Avenue.
“The vehicle became disabled; the suspect ran on foot and was eventually caught within a containment,” Turrill said, adding that the sheriff’s helicopter was called in during the search.
Deputies searched for about 30 minutes before finding Mitchell inside a garage. Mitchell had tried to force his way into an apartment, but was pushed out by two women before he hunkered down in the garage, according to deputies at the scene.
Mitchell was arrested for battery and DUI, Turrill said. His victim was treated for injuries at a local hospital.
