Two arrested for embezzlement from Valley Press

by The AV Times Staff • January 10, 2013

PALMDALE –Two independent delivery contractors for the Antelope Valley Press were arrested for stealing thousands of newspapers from the company, authorities said.

Joel Hernandez, 24, and Jacob Moran, 22, were arrested Wednesday for felony embezzlement. Moran, who is on active probation, was also arrested for probation violation.

The two brothers were contracted by the Antelope Valley Press to deliver newspapers, but instead, the men had been taking the newspapers to recycling yards and collecting money for the papers, according to Sgt. Kyle Bistline of Palmdale Station’s Partners Against Crime (PAC) Team.

When deputies went to the pair’s Palmdale home in the 38000 Block of 16th Street East to talk to them regarding the investigation, deputies found an additional 9,000 newspapers still bundled and stacked in front of the house, Bistline said.

The two brothers were arrested around 10:50 a.m. Wednesday and each jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail. Hernandez was released early Thursday morning, but Moran is still in custody. Both are due in court on Friday to answer charges.

A couple of real winners. Probably the AV Press should run background checks on people before they hire. Especially with the way the valley has become so ghetto-like the past 20 or so years.

How can that be a crime? The newspapers would first have to have some value.

They absolutely do! The cost of the paper itself, the printing cost and the fact they were to be delivered to paying customers.
It’s people like you who “forgive” the crime that make being a criminal acceptable in today’s society.
If you ran the AV Press I bet you’d be singinging a different tune. Kudos to the AV Press for prosecuting these two!

Proof the economy is still in Hard Times! What do you get, .02 cents a pound if you are lucky? $10 will 10yrs!

      It’s a two bagger actually.

Get paid to deliver the papers, then sell papers you don’t deliver for cash.

But you are right, they will get jail time, sort of kinda of with early release not much time. We need Sheriff Joe’s “Tent City” jail for fools like this to do some real time in.

Yeah, I was joking about 10yrs but not about the .02 cent per pound. $40-$50 a Ton is the going rate! I think they could have chosen a higher paying scam! lol

These two geniuses probably spend all day thinking of ways to scam a dollar, instead of working for an honest wage. Throw away the key.
