Palmdale, AMS celebrate Foreign Trade Zone designation

by The AV Times Staff • October 25, 2012

Mayor Jim Ledford and Palmdale Senior Economic Development Project Manager Kari Blackburn tour the AMS Fulfillment warehouse.

PALMDALE – Representatives from the City of Palmdale, AMS Fulfillment, the City of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County and Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon’s office celebrated the activation of AMS Fulfillment in the City of Palmdale’s Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) at a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday (Oct. 25) at AMS headquarters in Valencia.

“The City of Palmdale is proud to welcome AMS Fulfillment to its Foreign Trade Zone and connect them with the benefits of having a FTZ designation,” said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford. “With the elimination of redevelopment, our Foreign Trade Zone program is one of the last tools in our economic development toolbox that we can use to create wealth within the community by attracting new industry, diversifying the local economy and providing additional employment opportunities for local residents.  This also opens the door for other businesses throughout the entire FTZ area, including the Antelope Valley, to increase employment opportunities and investment.”

“Foreign Trade Zones are important to our economic health as they help expedite and encourage foreign commerce,” Ledford added. “They provide companies with customs duty savings and logistical benefits that can help encourage them to establish or maintain operations in the U.S., and especially for us, here in Southern California.”

AMS CEO Ken Wiseman told the crowd that AMS’ activation has already generated interest in the FTZ by other companies in the area.
