Distracted driver crashes car, injures toddler

by Terrance Dilworth • September 18, 2012

LANCASTER – A driver talking on her cell phone, while traveling at a high rate of speed, Tuesday afternoon, clipped the car in front of her and careened out of control before crashing into a tree, witnesses said.

The crash injured the woman’s three-year-old son, authorities said.

The collision happened around 4:30 p.m. on West Avenue J, near 15th Street West, and involved a burgundy Honda Accord and a gray Saturn Aura.  Both vehicles were traveling westbound on Avenue J, said deputies on the scene.

“When we crossed 15th [street], I felt the front of her car bump my car,” said the driver of the Saturn Aura. “I looked in my rearview side mirror and her car was flying around, hitting the side of the tree and bouncing off.”

The crash shattered the back windows of the Honda Accord, injuring the woman’s three-year-old son, who was sitting in the back seat.

The child had glass fragments in his face, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment, said deputies on the scene. The woman was shocked, but uninjured in the collision. No other injuries were reported.

The incident is under investigation.

WOW! MS. EBONY G, HOW DID YOU DO THAT? HOW DID YOU GET A TRAFFIC COLLISION REPORT IN JUST THREE DAYS? AMAZING REALLY!! LAST TIME I HAD AN ACCIDENT IT TOOK ME 10 DAYS TO GET MINE. SO I COULD SUBMIT IT TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY. I THINK YOU SHOULD POST A COPY OF SAID REPORT SO WE CAN SEE IT FOR OURSELVES!

The amount of false information in this article is ridculous. The injured people in this accident are my sister and nephew. She was on her way to Sprint to pick up her cellphone from being repaired that she was supposedly on. There is nothing in the police report nor any ticket issued for cellphone use. She was not speeding at the time of the accident. The reason she lost control was because of a repair to her car that failed. There were no glass fragments in the babies face. Before you run with what the media says you should put yourself in the situation. The person responsible for writing this report should be ashamed because you are supposed to be a reliable source of information.

      Hi Ebony,

I understand your concerns about the information in my article, however, I did not write it with the intent to hurt you or your family.

Everything in the article was told to me (and recorded) from three different sources — the other driver, the passenger in the other driver’s vehicle, and the deputy who responded to the scene.

We do not have a copy of the police report that you are referencing, because in nonfatal collisions, it usually takes between five to 10 days for traffic deputies to generate a report, we are told.

If further investigation by the traffic deputies have disputed any of the preliminary information given to us on the scene, we will be happy to update the story with the new information. Please provide us with the verifiable information at editor@theavtimes.com and we will update the story promptly. Thanks for reading!

Interesting enough is that Lancaster LASD is fairly unique in that they have a Commercial Traffic deputy who could be called upon in a case like this should it be necessary. If at the time of the collision the driver told the responding deputy that there was a mechanical problem with the vehicle that caused the collision then they would impound the vehicle. At a later time the Commercial Traffic deputy would perform a complete mechanical inspection of the vehicle and include it in the report. Usually that work is reserved for fatalities, but can be requested by any number of people involved in the collision.

I was going to have this done when my wife broke her neck on Quartz Hill mountain road in December, but decided it was unnecessary after we found out from our insurance the accident would in no way affect our premiums due to the ‘nature’ of it.

[removed] AV TMES. YOU SHOULDNT HAVE TO LIE TO GET A STORY. SHE DIDNT HAVE A PHONE TO BE ON DURING THE COLLISION WHICH WE HAVE PROOF OF. SECOND SHE WAS NOT SPEEDING. THESE SO CALLED FACTS WERE GIVEN BY A KID IN THE AREA WHO ALSO REPORTED SHE HIT THE FRONT OF THE SATURN WHICH SHE DID NOT.

Ebony is correct that she did not hit the FRONT of a Saturn, she hit the BACK. And yes… she was on A phone. Was it hers? Who knows but she was on a phone.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve almost been hit or run over because some moron is on the phone. The streets are bad, but parking lots.. you take your life in your had getting out of your car.

I hope they throw the book at this lady, and I would love to see the laws REALLY kicked up a notch (or ten) for people driving while on the phone or texting. It would be bad enough that they are risking their own lives… but they are putting anyone and everyone on the road at risk.

Complete and total morons, is all can say!

Increase the fine, cops will start writing more tickets.

My favorite example of people (mostly women, sorry to be sexiest, but it is what it is) using cell phones when driving is seen in just about any parking lot. I see women backing out of a parking space in their monster SUV while yapping away on the cell phone. Of course they have a car full of kids while performing this trick. Talk about improving your driving skills.

REALLY, someone had to make a comment about her NOT being Black or hispanic… SO does that really matter, a SMALL CHILD was injured… It does not matter of color, BUT SINCE you did bring it up, lets bring up the fact that the Black people smoke their weed while they are driving, YEAH THATS REAL SAFE for everyone around them, and the Hispanic drive SO freaking slow, becasue they are SOOOOOOOOOOOO PARANOID about being pulled over because they dont have a license and are not her legally here, and the white people on their Phone, AND ALLLLLLLL OF THEM playing their annoying music so loud that it rattles other peoples car windows….

OH and note to those people, you look really damn sutpid in POS car with a 5,000 system in with 20.00 speakers , GET IT TOGETHER…

SO NOW THAT WE HAVE COVERED THAT…. LET KEEP IN MIND , THAT IF YOU CAN AFFORD A CELL PHONE, YOU CAN AFFORD A 20.000 EAR PIECE WIRELESS OR NOT FROM WALMART, RADIO SHACK, TARGET, JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE. ,

there you have it ……….. ME

The girl sitting on the side in the pic does not have a kid nor was she driving any vehicle. The one driving the vehicle was African-American as was her child.

Get off the damn phone. I see people on their phone all the time. You canNOT truly multitask safely.
On a more positive note, I am super glad to see that at least her kid was IN a car seat. I see so many people letting their kids crawl around the back like this is the 1950s. At least back then people didn’t have a whole lot of distractions in the car. (Although I’m grateful the open container law is in effect now!)

Wow how absolutely disgusting. Speeding and a phone call were more important to this woman than her own child. It seems its always the kid who ends up hurt too. This makes me sick.
