Sheryl Spiller to lead DPSS

by The AV Times Staff • July 10, 2012

Sheryl Spiller

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted today to appoint Sheryl L. Spiller to serve as the Director of the Department of Public Social Services of the County of Los Angeles (DPSS).

Spiller will head the department at an annual salary of $245,000. Since August 2011, Spiller has served as Acting Director of Public Social Services after the former director, Philip Browning, was named to head the Department of Children and Family Services.

A longtime employee of the county of Los Angeles, Spiller has worked for over 40 years with DPSS. During her tenure with the Department she has served in various management positions in which she has guided policy decisions for the department. She is credited with spearheading a public outreach effort that resulted in over 100,000 children being enrolled into Medi-Cal.

“The county, under the leadership of this Board of Supervisors, has created extraordinary opportunities for professional development making it possible for someone to begin employment at the lowest entry level and work their way up to head a major department,” said Spiller in a news release.

The Department of Public Social Services, which employees over 13,000 employees, provides benefits and services to low-income residents of LA County.

DPSS is the second largest locally operated social services agency in the nation, serves over two million people daily, and distributes $3 billion dollars in benefits annually.
