Your $10 a month can give hope to child victims of abuse

by The AV Times Staff • February 7, 2012

LANCASTER – Can you spare $10 a month? If so, your generous donation can help The Children Center of the Antelope Valley provide much-needed services that make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of abused children living right here in the community.

“Child abuse is one hundred percent preventable and through education and outreach, The Children’s Center of the Antelope Valley will continue to provide hope and support to transform our community one child at a time,” said Sue Page, Executive Director of the Center.

Traditionally, the Center has relied on annual galas and smaller fundraisers, throughout the year, to generate sufficient funds to maintain its various programs of prevention, treatment and education. The purchase of big ticket auction items, offered at these galas, was often restricted to attendee’s with deep pockets.

A new fundraising campaign, called “$10 of Hope”, encourages a broader audience to make a modest, but meaningful, contribution of $10 per month to the Center.  This smaller amount, given on a consistent basis, could represent a significant resource of badly needed funds.

Child abuse is an issue that’s often manifested in family silence; therefore, programs offered at the Children’s Center have become increasingly important. Officials at the Center say child abuse is on the rise, and the Antelope Valley represents a region of concern.

National statistics remain shocking:

  • More than 6 million children abused in the US, every year.
  • Abuse touches every race, religion, ethnicity and economic status.
  • One in every 4 girls and 7 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18.
  • Annually, 100,000 children are abused by a family member.
  • Every day, 5 children die as a result of abuse and 80% are under the age of 4.

The Children’s Center of the Antelope Valley’s “$10 of Hope” fundraiser, spearheaded by Board member, Andrea Minghelli, was created to provide funding to support these much needed services.

The program creates an account whereby the participant authorizes a monthly charge of $10 that is applied to their credit card.  The account is secure, and the individual retains full control of their contribution.

Incorporated in 1988, the Children’s Center of the Antelope Valley is a private non-profit organization that provides a continuum of services to child victims of abuse, children at risk of abuse, and their families.  The Center offers innovative, comprehensive prevention, intervention and treatment services and is the coordinating agency of multiple community partnerships involving both public and private agencies.
