Valley CHP makes 20 DUI Arrests over New Year’s Holiday Weekend

by The AV Times Staff • January 3, 2012

CHP made 20 DUI arrests in the Antelope Valley over the New Years holiday weekend.

ANTELOPE VALLEY – The California Highway Patrol made 23 arrests throughout the Antelope Valley during its Maximum Enforcement Period, which lasted from 6:01 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 to 11:59 p.m., Monday, Jan. 2, 2012.

Of the 23 arrested over the New Year’s holiday weekend, 20 were arrested for driving under the influence, said Antelope Valley CHP spokesman Abel Hernandez.

“In my opinion, even one DUI is too many because that means somebody is out there putting their lives and the lives of others in jeopardy,” said Hernandez.

Statewide, the CHP made 1,181 arrests over the New Year’s holiday weekend, compared to 961 during the same time period last year, said Hernandez. Additionally, there were 13 fatalities statewide during the maximum enforcement period, two of which were in Southern California. None of the fatalities were reported in the Antelope Valley, Hernandez said.

Locally, the Maximum Enforcement Period included one DUI/license checkpoint on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. That checkpoint yielded three DUI arrests, 16 citations and eight impounds. Read more here.
