Be a needy family’s holiday miracle

by M. Dilworth • December 9, 2011

The staff at SAVES are calling on residents to help make the holidays brighter for local families in need through its Holiday Sponsorship Program.

PALMDALE – South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES) is calling on residents to help spread the joy this holiday season by sponsoring a family in need.

“We’re really going after the community to find people that are in a position to help,” said SAVES Coordinator Patricia Morales. “If they just spread their holiday a little further, they can help us to provide for families in real need this season.”

SAVES has identified 200 families who are in need through its Holiday Sponsorship Program.

Community donations will help provide these families with a holiday food basket and toys for the children.

The holiday basket contains all the items necessary for a complete holiday dinner.

“The basket has a turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables, a pie, dinner rolls… everything that you would need to put together a holiday dinner,” said Morales. “Each child gets a toy and then they get a board game that can be played by the family.”

Residents may sponsor a senior for $35, a small family of 1 to 3 members for $75, a medium sized family of 4 to 6 for $95, or a large family of 7 or more for $120.

Donations of any amount and unwrapped toys are also welcomed and appreciated.

“I think it’s a really great way for parents to teach their children that in this time, when we are all expecting to receive, it really is a great experience to be able to give as well,” Morales said. “It’s a win-win for the families, because when they help somebody, they are also helping themselves.”

Donations to SAVES are tax deductible.

Donations may be made online at www.cityofpalmdale.org/foundation/donate.asp or by calling 661-267-5191. Make checks payable to the Palmdale Community Foundation (Tax ID # 95-4669404).

Since 1983, SAVES, a City of Palmdale program, has been providing a practical and caring approach to serving people in need.  Basic necessities are provided to low-income and displaced families/individuals who are experiencing an emergency situation on a temporary basis.

For more information on how you can help, contact SAVES, Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 661-267-5191.
