LANCASTER – A Lancaster grandmother was arrested Monday afternoon for driving drunk and dragging one of her grandchildren from her vehicle.
The following is the Sheriff’s report of the incident:
Monday on October 10, 2011, at 4:40 P.M., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Parks Bureau deputies responded to Apollo Park in Lancaster to investigate a drunk driver who was allegedly dragging a juvenile from the vehicle.
The deputies located the suspect Marie Shipley a female 55 years of age, at her home in Lancaster.
A short time later, it was discovered that she had been drinking beer and appeared intoxicated. Shipley had allegedly been driving drunk in the park with her three male juvenile grandchildren in the vehicle.
The grandchildren began arguing while in the vehicle and she yelled at them to stop. The boys, ages 7, 11 and 13, jumped out of the moving vehicle. When Shipley slowed down, one of the juveniles attempted to get back into the moving vehicle.
As Shipley started to accelerate away, the boy fell to the ground and was injured. Shipley stopped when she heard her grandchild yell in pain.
Shipley drove back to her home with all three of her grandchildren. The suspect’s daughter later drove the injured child to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries to his arms. Shipley was placed under arrest for felony driving under the influence and was booked and released at Lancaster Station.
The children are now with their mother.
Sheriff’s Parks Bureau detectives are investigating the incident.
