PALMDALE – Two Palmdale youths attending different events were caught doing the same thing—separating their trash from their recyclables-and were rewarded for their actions with new solar powered backpacks.

On Thursday, August 11, eight-year-old Manny Diaz was caught recycling at the City of Palmdale’s Thursday Night on the Square event.

Nine-year old Kirsten Peterson was seen recycling at the Garth Guy Live! Concert on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Palmdale Amphitheater.

Both Diaz and Peterson were presented with brand new solar powered backpacks capable of charging phones, laptops and cameras, courtesy of Waste Management, as part of a “Recycling Rock” promotion with the City to build awareness of the importance of recycling.

This year, Palmdale and Waste Management have given away 12 solar powered backpacks. Another solar powered backpack will be presented at the final Thursday Night on the Square event this evening.

It’s always refreshing to read about positive stories about our youth for a change.
