PALMDALE – Alert citizens helped deputies capture three suspects who abandoned a stolen vehicle and then ran into an east Palmdale neighborhood Monday afternoon. The mother of one of the suspects was also arrested for aiding and abetting, authorities said.
The incident occurred in a residential area near 25th Street East and East Avenue R-10, officials said. Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday, a concerned resident contacted the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station and reported three suspects in a new black Audi acting suspicious, according to Sgt. Dave Sauer of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.
“It appeared to a citizen who saw them that they were casing the neighborhood for possible burglaries, because they were going up to doors and knocking on the doors to see if anybody was home,” Sauer said.
Patrol units were sent into the neighborhood, and soon after, a deputy spotted the vehicle in question.
“The bad guys tried to get away by maneuvering their car quickly through some turns, losing our deputy,” Sauer said. “When we found the car, the suspects had already gotten out of the car and fled.”
The three suspects abandoned their vehicle near Sparrow Drive and Swallow Lane and then took off on foot, jumping fences and running through people’s backyards.
“A couple of other concerned citizens saw the directions that they went, so we contained a fairly large area and did a yard-to-yard search,” Sauer said.
After about an hour, deputies caught up to all three suspects in the area of Yorkshire Drive and Dartmouth Lane. Deputies also arrested the mother of one of the suspects for aiding and abetting a felony suspect. Sauer said the woman was on a cell phone with her son relaying deputies’ movements and “trying to give him a way to escape.”
“So all three of the bad guys are in custody, the car is recovered, along with other stolen property,” Sauer said, adding that the new black Audi was stolen during a burglary in the Los Angeles area. He said LAPD detectives would recover the vehicle and the stolen property, which was most likely taken during the Los Angeles burglary.
The suspects’ names were not immediately available Monday.
