LANCASTER – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging people to get their Influenza (flu) shots as soon as possible due to increasing influenza activity in parts of the country and expected further increases in the coming weeks and months.
Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH) will help in this effort by offering free flu shots to all adults 65 and older, adults with chronic illness, and those who act as caretakers of individuals with chronic disease.
“We care about our community’s health and would like to make it more convenient for our senior citizens to receive their annual flu vaccine,” said Edward Mirzabegian, AVH Chief Executive Officer. “Senior citizens sometimes find obtaining flu vaccinations difficult. Flu shots often require a visit to the physician’s office with costly co-payments. We hope that by offering free flu shots, we can make staying healthy easier this year.”
Free flu vaccinations will be available for adults 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 8 in The Café on J, located on the hospital’s first floor.
To qualify for a free flu shot, individuals must meet one of the following guidelines:
- Adults age 65 and over
- Adults of all ages with chronic illness (i.e. pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney or metabolic disorders, etc.)
- Caretakers of individuals with one or more of the above health conditions
The flu vaccine is formulated to provide protection against three different flu viruses: H1N1, H3N2 and influenza B.
